The Dell PowerEdge R720xd is a 2u, 2-socket server that offers the same features as found on the R720 but with significantly more storage. This is an excellent server platform for medium to large-scale enterprise businesses and data centers.
The Dell R720xd server offers a substantial increase in storage over the PowerEdge R720. The R720 comes in two chassis configurations, one with up to eight 3.5-inch drives and another that supports up to sixteen 2.5-inch drives. In comparison, the Dell R720xd also has two chassis configurations, one with up to twenty-six 2.5-inch drives and another that supports twelve 3.5-inch drives. Two more 2.5-inch drives can be installed in drive cage on the back of the chassis. This platform excels in data-intensive applications like medical imaging and use as an email server.
The PowerEdge R720xd features Intel's C600 chipset supports and a maximum of two E5-2600 or E5-2600 v2 processors. Powering the system are either hot plug redundant 495W, 750W, or 1100W power supplies. Hot plug fans are standard equipment.
A range of hard drive options are supported on the R720xd and include: 2.5-inch SAS and SATA SSDs and HDDs, and 2.5-inch nearline SAS. 3.5-inch drive options include: SAS, nearline SAS, and SATA self-encrypting drives (SED). 2.5" Express Flash PCIe drives are only supported on the R720. There are options for 12 and 24 drives on the PowerEdge R720xd with an option for two more 2.5-inch drives mounted in back—available on both the 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch chassis. Supported internal HD/RAID controllers include the PERC H310, H710, and H710P. For direct attached storage (DAS) applications, a PERC H810 HD/RAID controller is optional. Keep in mind, storage cannot be reconfigured or upgraded after purchase, so choose your storage needs carefully.
Using two processors, this system supports a maximum of 24 DIMM modules for a total of 768GB using 32GB DDR3 memory modules. Unbuffered (UDIMM), registered (RDIMM), and load-reduced (LRDIMM) memory modules are supported but cannot be mixed.
The R720xd has six PCIe slots total, including two x16 FLFH slots, one x8 FLFH slot, and three x8 HLHH slots. Dell Select Network Fabric Adapters give Administrators choices with the embedded NICs and can choose from 1GbE, 10GbE and 10GbE SFP+ with dual and quad port options available. Additional NICs and HD/RAID controllers are supported in the PCIe slots for increased throughput and storage density.
The OpenManage management portfolio includes an integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC7) with LifeCycle controller. iDRAC helps Administrators provision, deploy, and manage Dell servers from local and remote locations using a standard browser. OpenManage gives administrators a single point of management when dealing with third-party systems management solutions already active. A dedicated iDRAC7 port located on the back of the system is only active with the Enterprise license.
