The Dell PowerEdge R905 is a 4U four-socket rack server designed for performance and streamlined virtualization deployment with substantial memory capacity, storage, and I/O scalability. This server features AMD's Opteron processors and twice the memory of the previous generation.
The Dell R905 server offers a robust four-socket platform designed for database applications and extreme virtualization with support for virtualization software from the major manufacturers including VMware ESX, Citrix XenServer and Microsoft Hyper-V. This server also an excellent choice for migrating virtual machines to house on an x86 platform for a more flexible and affordable option when compared to a RISC a platform. This system is similar to the Dell PowerEdge R900 but supports AMD Opteron processors instead of using Intel Xeon processors.
The Broadcom HT-2100 or HT-1100 chipset supports up to four AMD Opteron 8000 series processors. The supported processors offer four to six cores each for up to 24 cores total with 6-core processors installed.
Up to 32 ECC DDR2 DIMM modules are supported on the system in a four processor configuration. Memory modules are housed in four individual risers that stack up on either side of the PCIe slots located in the middle of the system board. Each processor in turn supports eight memory modules. With all 32 slots loaded with 8GB modules, it will support up to 256GB of total memory. High availability features including, memory sparing and memory mirroring are available depending on your needs for speed and resiliency.
There are five drive trays on the front of the Dell R905 that can support a maximum of 5TB of internal storage, either SAS, SATA or nearline SAS. The five bays will support either five 3.5-inch drives or eight 2.5-inch drives. There is also a single optical drive located on the front of the system that can house an optional DVD-ROM, CD-RW, or DVD-RW. There are several HD RAID controllers supported on the system.
Seven PCIe slots are availalble on the R905 rack server in a four processor configuration and can be used for additional NICs, or RAID controllers. Video is handled by an integrated ATI Radeon ES1000 chip with 32MB of SDRAM. There are four embedded Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet NICs, plus other options for communications depending on which operating system you choose. Optional add-in 8GB HBAs and NICs are also supported for greater bandwidth. Power is supplied by dual redundant 1100W hot-plug PSUs.
Systems management on the PowerEdge R905 is handled by Dell's OpenManage suite of tools with remote management handled by a Baseboard Management Controller via network or serial port. iDRAC5 is optional. The system supports several operating systems and also supports several optional embedded hypervisors for VM management. A small diagnostic panel on the front of the system provides immediate system health status of critical components.
The PowerEdge R905 delivers very impressive performance at a price that's somewhat less than a similar generation server outfitted with intel Xeon processors. This is an excellent platform for a number of standard applications but also has features that are highly conducive to creating virtual machines. This 4U server is a natural for database support and extreme virtualization.
