The Dell EMC PowerEdge R930 Gen13 server is one of Dell’s most powerful 4u rack server to date. With four CPUs, up to 12TB of available memory and storage options that include up to 24 hot-swap 2.5-inch drives, and a tiered storage solution, this server is an excellent choice for extreme virtualization and applications that require low latency and in-memory processing.
The Dell EMC PowerEdge R930 server offers high reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) for mission critical services and provides high-level support for High-Performance Computing (HPC), ERP, CRM, accounting, sales and HR. With the dense memory offered by this server, in-memory database applications like SAP HANA are easily supported providing real-time, in-memory analytics for Online Transaction Processing (OLTP), and Online Analytical Processing. The R930 rack server is also an excellent choice for high performance computing (HPC) applications.
This server features the C602J chipset, which is capable of supporting up to four Intel Xeon E7-8800 or E7-4800 v4 processors offering more cores and greater memory bandwidth when compared to v3 CPUs. Four to 24 cores of processing power are available depending on the choice of processor, with up to 96 total cores available when paired with four top-end processors. More cores means more processing power and support for more virtual partitions.
Eight memory card riser books are located behind the drive bays on this platform. Each riser holds twelve DDR4 memory modules, either registered DIMMs (RDIMM) or load-reduced DIMMs (LRDIMM). DDR4 modules support transfer speeds of up to 2400MT/s, although keep in mind, transfer speeds are also dependent on CPU choice, memory module speed, and configuration. In a four processor configuration with all 96 slots loaded with 64GB DDR4 memory modules, up to 6TB of memory is available. Using 128GB modules 12TB of memory is supported!
There are three basic chassis configurations with this server. One that supports up to 24 front-mounted 2.5-inch drives. Another with four 2.5-inch drives, and another that supports tiered storage with a combination of up to sixteen 2.5-inch drives paired with 8 NVMe PCIe 2.5-inch SSDs. The various configurations support SAS, SATA, or Nearline SAS 2.5-inch HDDs and SSDs. NAND SSDs offer a significant improvement over standard hard drives. With two daughter cards installed on the system, two PERC 9 RAID controllers can be installed maximizing I/O.
Up to ten PCIe 3.0 slots are available with all four processors active, and optional left and right PCIe risers installed. The PCIe slots offer options for more NICs, HD controllers or converged network adapters for increased I/O or direct attached storage. This system also supports two daughter cards which can be used for additional HD/RAID controllers as described above or for a flexible LOM, and they won’t take away any of the PCIe slots. If setting up virtual machines, an optional internal Dual SD module provides redundant failover for the hypervisor when used in mirror mode.
The Dell R930 server comes standard with iDRAC8 Express for out of band and remote management without the need to install additional software. OpenManage Essentials leverages the embedded iDRAC8 module with Lifecycle controller to simplify and automate common server lifecycle management tasks. OpenManage also includes Server Configuration Management capabilities to automate configuration and deployment of bare metal servers. Administrators can easily upgrade to Enterprise by purchasing an upgrade license key. Upgrading to Enterprise provides additional management features and will also activate the front-mounted iDRAC SD card slot and the dedicated iDRAC port.
The Dell PowerEdge R930 server is the flagship of Dell's rack server line. This server excels at high performance computing, featuring accessible high-density memory for virtualization and demanding applications. With support for up to 24 SFF hard drives and 12TB of memory this server is also a natural choice for hosting in-memory storage and data base applications like SAP HANA. Additional uses include Online Transaction Processing (OLTP), Online Analytical Processing (OLAP), Customer Relationship management (CRM), Enterprise resource Planning (ERP), and many others.
