The HPE ProLiant DL580 Gen10 Server is a highly scalable 4U system designed for intensive database, graphic, and storage applications. It supports up to 4x 1st or 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processors, with each socket supporting 12x DIMM slots. Storage solutions on this system include a maximum of 48x hot-pluggable Small Form Factor (SFF) SAS/SATA drive bays. 16x expansion slots are available on the rear of the system.
Designed to improve scalability of server infrastructure, the HPE DL580 Gen10 Server features quad 1st or 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processors with up to 28 cores each. A total of 48x DIMM slots are available on the system board evenly divided between each of the four CPU sockets. When all four CPU sockets are active, the maximum memory capacity is up to 12TB when outfitted with a combination of HPE Persistent memory modules and DRAM. The front of the system has 6x storage cage areas each of which can be outfitted with 8x Small Form Factor (SFF) drives. At full storage capacity, it can support up to 48x Small Form Factor (SFF) SAS/SATA drive bays. The box on the bottom left of the chassis can also be used to support a universal media bay with an optical drive, USB ports and 2SFF drive bays. 16x expansion slots are available on the rear of the system provide options for network controllers, HBA, RAID controllers and optional GPUs from Nvidia including the Ampere-based A100 80GB and Quadro RTX 8000.
A maximum of 4x 1st or 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processors can be installed on the HPE DL580 Gen10 Server. Supported processors on this system include options with a minimum of 4x physical cores or a maximum of 28x Physical cores. Virtual thread counts range between 8x and 56x, per CPU. With top-of-the-line 28-core processors installed in all 4x CPU sockets, this platform can support up 112 physical cores and 224 virtual threads for maximum compute per-core performance. To ensure sufficient system cooling 12x (11 + 1) hot-plug redundant standard fans are available.
Each CPU socket supports 6x memory channels with 2x DIMM slots per channel, and 12x slots per socket. A total of 48x active DIMM slots are available on the system board with all 4x processors installed. This system can also be configured with just two processors, and can quickly scale to support 2x more CPUs and their associated memory modules with the introduction of the CPU Mezzanine Board kit. The CPU Mezzanine Board kit is either available at time of purchase or an optional upgrade that can add two more CPU sockets and 24 more memory module slots if the system is initially only configured with 2x CPUs. Registered DIMMs (RDIMMs) and Load Reduced DIMMs (LRDIMMs) can be installed on this system with speeds of up to 2666MHz. Two memory configurations designed to maximize the memory footprint use either standard DRAM modules or Persistent Memory modules (PMem). Using 128GB DDR4 DRAM modules across all 48x DIMM slots produces a capacity of 6TB. The other option uses 512GB Persistent Memory modules for a capacity of 12TB. These options are dependent on chosen processor models with PMem modules only compatible with 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs. Non-Volatile DIMMs, or NVDIMMs, are also supported but only using 1st generation CPUs.
Storage on the HPE DL580 Server is 4.7 times greater than that provided on the previous generation DL580 Gen9, which only supported 10 drives up front. The Gen10 version has up front support for up to 48 x 2.5-inch SAS or SATA drives and can support up to 20 NVMe U.2 storage devices as well. If configured with 48 drives the optional universal Media Bay is unavailable. Drives types can also be intermixed to support a variety of different workloads and tiered storage. The system has integrated RAID support for up to 10x SATA drives but to support other drive types you will need to install an optional SmartArray HD/RAID controller. The optional Gen10 RAID controllers also support an optional battery to power NVMe drives, and NVDIMMs, in the event of a power failure.
There are 16 x PCIe Gen3.0 slots available, total, in a four-processor configuration. Expansion slots are housed in three separate expansion risers, a primary riser (slots 1-7), a secondary riser (slots 8-14), and a tertiary riser (slots 15-16). The primary riser is included with the system for base models or two processor configurations. The secondary riser is optional and can be ordered separately. The secondary riser comes with the tertiary riser, which cannot be ordered separately. The system will also support up to four GPU accelerators for High-Performance Computing (HPC) applications.
Integrated Lights Out 5.0 and HPE’s OneView composable software provide management of the system. OneView is part of HPE’s Composable strategy that allows the configuration and reconfiguration of server assets to deliver resources where they are most needed, quickly. HPE’s “Silicon Root of Trust” initiative has also implemented several other security features to protect your data.
The HPE ProLiant DL580 Gen10 Server is a significant improvement over the previous generation. Intel’s 1st or 2nd generation Xeon Scalable processors deliver support for faster compute and memory. They also deliver significantly more storage, plus support for NVMe drives and PMem memory modules for increased resiliency and data support. Up to four Nvidia GPU accelerators can also deliver enhanced compute for HPC applications.
