The Dell Precision 7920 Rack Workstation delivers the same performance as the Precision 7920 tower workstation but in a rack-mountable form factor that provides greater security and manageability. It supports Dual Intel Xeon processors, up to 3TB of memory, and up to three high-end 300W GPUs totaling 900W.
For companies that need greater security to protect their intellectual data or need a platform they can administer for multiple users, then the Dell Precision 7920 rack workstation is a great option. It also features Dell's integrated iDRAC9.0 out-of-band management solution to simplify maintenance and upgrades to the system both at the chassis and remotely.
Two 1st or 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors can be installed from either the Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum families, including that high-end Platinum 8180M processor with 28 cores and support for 1.5TB of memory each. The system also supports up to three double-wide GPUs. Powering the system are one or two 1100W or 1600W PSUs. The 1600W PSUs are required for certain configurations.
The tower workstation does support a few more drives but the Precision 7920 Rack Workstation still offers impressive storage with support for up to eight 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch drives with the drive tray adapter. You can also install a maximum of eight M.2 drives in two separate Dell Precision Ultra-Speed Drive Quad x16 cards that can support four 1TB M.2 drives each. Two integrated SATA controllers provide four ports each to support all eight up front drives at 6Gb/s. For faster data transmission rates, you can install a PERC controller like the H330, H730P, or the H740P, all of which offer additional RAID options and faster data transmission speeds of 12Gb/s to support SAS drives. The NVMe drives can also be RAIDed together using Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RSTe) and Virtual RAID on CPU (vROC) but requires both processors. Optional slimline optical devices are supported.
There is also another 8180 processor, without the "M", that only supports 768GB of memory. If you want access to the full memory potential on the Dell 7920 workstation, you will need one of those processors with an "M" after the model number, as those processors with an "M" will support up to 1.5TB. Each of the CPUs support six memory channels with two slots per channel, 12 slots total per processor, and 24 memory slots active with dual processors.
There are eight expansion slots total, with four assigned to CPU1 and four controlled by CPU2. Choose from optional network cards, more storage with dual and quad Ultra-Speed drives, or go with up to three 300W double-wide GPUs from either Nvidia or AMD. High-end GPUs provide advanced graphics support for things like 3D modeling, animation, film editing, and simulation. The rear of the chassis features up to four RJ-45 network ports and one dedicated for iDRAC. Installing an optional Network Daughter Card (NDC) provides options for both 1GbE and 10GbE.
Management of the system is where the tower and rack version diverge. Simply by mounting the system in the server room offers much greater security from traditional theft because the server room is typically a secure environment. The rack version also supports Dell's OpenManage portfolio including iDRAC with Lifecycle Controller for status, deployment, troubleshooting, and remediation. QuickSync 2.0 is an optional feature providing at chassis monitoring and maintenance using the OpenManage Mobile app. Dell's Precision Optimizer will also help users get the most performance out of their system from a slew of Independent Software Vendor (ISV) certified programs.
The Dell Precision 7920 Rack Workstation offers a very secure platform to protect your Intellectual property while providing your staff with the tools to drive your business goals. With a rack workstation it's easy to add users while still getting the full performance of a professional workstation.
