The HP Z230 Workstation is an entry-level single-socket tower workstation built for today's demanding business applications. It features generous storage and I/O capabilities in a compact yet affordable package with the enterprise reliability you would expect from a professional workstation.
The HP Z230 tower workstation was released in 2013, to replace the Z220, and offers substantially improved performance over its processor. Like its more powerful siblings, it features ISV Certification (Independent Software Vender) to work with industry standard software from a variety of disciplines including design, finance, and geology. It's also more than a match for standard business applications.
This system is ISV certified to run software applications from industry leading manufacturers used by design professionals, financial analysts, and geologists. ISV is an acronym for Independent Software Vendor. This means independent software vendors have tested the software, hardware, and components to ensure stable and reliable performance.
Intel's C622 chipset supports a single processor. Users can choose from several Xeon E5-1200 v3 processors with quad cores, or an Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 processor with dual or quad cores, or a single Intel Pentium CPU with dual cores. Transfer speeds of up to 1600MT/s are available on all processors except for the lone Pentium processor which supports transfer speeds of up to 1333MT/s. Most of the available processors support Intel vPro Technology, which includes hyper-threading and Intel HD Graphics.
The single processor supports four unbuffered (UDIMM) memory module slots total, for a maximum of 32GB of memory using 8GB ECC or non-ECC DDR3L low-voltage memory modules. Keep in mind, the slowest performer between the CPU and memory modules will determine the speed at which the memory is clocked.
There are three internal storage bays; two 3.5-inch storage bays that can support either a 3.5-inch or 2.5 inch drive with a drive cage adapter, and a 2.5-inch drive bay that holds a single drive. The fourth drive occupies one of the 5.25-inch media bays. It should be noted that the forth drive will require an external bay adapter. Both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch SATA, SATA Self-encrypting HDDs and SSDs are supported on this system. There's also support for an optional PCIe Solid State Drives with up to 512GB using a HP Z Turbo Drive SSD. It has an integrated SATA 6.0 Gb/s Controller with factory integrated RAID on the motherboard supporting limited RAID functionality of 0 and 1. An optional handle can also be mounted in the top 5.25-inch bay on the front of the system to provide a hand hold to help when moving the workstation.
The system supports Windows and Linux operating systems, which offer configuration and management options. Intel's Active Management System 9.1 and the HP Performance Advisor to help configure your system for use with your preferred software platform. The system can also be accessed remotely using HP Remote Graphic Software (RGS).
There are 5 PCI slots total, including one PCIe 3.0, three PCIe 2.0, and a legacy PCI slot. Here again you have options for increased performance and IO with a range of supported GPUs from both Nvidia and AMD supporting applications from professional 2D graphics, entry level, mid-range, to high-end 3D graphic rendering using either Nvidia Quadro or AMD FirePro graphics cards. Depending on the operating system and GPU selection, there's also support for up to six monitors but that will require installing both NVIDIA NVS 510 and NVS 310 graphics cards. Other options include PCIe M.2 NVMe drives for super-fast storage, Audio cards, Thunderbolt, media card readers, and NICs. There are also several USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports on the front and back of the system for connecting additional external devices. Power is supplied by either a 400W 92% efficient or 320W standard efficiency power supply. The 400W PSU is recommended when installing more than one graphics card or to support multiple expansion slots.
The Z230 is an excellent choice for performance and budget, while still delivering the enterprise reliability of a professional workstation. For serious 3D modeling, check out other offerings from HP including the Z440, which also supports a single processor or the Z640 and Z840 workstations with dual Xeon 35-2600 processors but that said the Z230 will more than meet the needs of most professionals.
